[William B Bull; Geological Survey (U.S.),; California. Department of Water Resources.]. Alluvial fans have greatly diverse sizes, slopes, types of deposits and source-area characteristics.

They are most widespread in the drier parts of the world but have been studied also in humid regions such as Japan, the Himalaya Mountains (Drew, ), and Canada (Winder, ), and in the Arctic regions (Hoppe and Ekman, ; Legget. The alluvial-fan deposits of western Fresno County, California, are mudflows, water-laid sediments, and intermediate types. Common voids in the deposits are intergranular openings between grains that are held in place by a clay bond Cited by: Alluvial fans and alluvial fan floods show great variability in climate, fan history, rates and styles of tectonism, source area lithology, vegetation, and land use.

For this reason, it is essential Geomorphology of segmented alluvial fans in Western Fresno County any investigation of alluvial fan flooding include careful examination of the specific fan for. The terminological usage followed here considers alluvial fans to be landforms and sedimentary systems that are distinct from fluvial fans, while the term megafan, first adopted by Gohain & Parkash (), loosely applies to fluvial fans attaining radii in excess of c.

30 km and of large areal extent (up to 10 5 km 2) (e.g. Leier et al. This volume includes papers based on up-to-date research, and focuses on three themes: alluvial fan processes, dynamics of Quaternary alluvial fans and fan sedimentary sequences. Linking the papers is an emphasis on the controls of fan geomorphology, sedimentology and dynamics.
